Amdocs Intelligent Networking suite E2ESNO solution showcases the ‘single pane of glass’ concept by demonstrating the end-to-end service and network orchestration and automation that provides the complete lifecycle management of advanced 5G connectivity services, including 5G public network-integrated mobile private networks.

What it takes to build a 5G public network-integrated mobile private network

When it comes to supporting Industry 4.0 use cases, a mobile private network (MPN) will have very stringent requirements. These include latency, reliability and high accuracy positioning. To satisfy them, it requires a combination of 5G technology and enterprise network solutions.

MPNs can be implemented in several ways. Thanks to the latest developments in end-to-end service and network orchestration and automation solutions, the ability to deploy, manage and monetize 5G services based on 5G Standalone technology is growing closer to reality. And when they do, partnerships between enterprises and mobile network operators (MNOs) will enable the creation of win-win business solutions that best serve the desired outcomes.

According to GSA’s recent Private Mobile Network report, the number of customers deploying private mobile networks in Q3 2022 was 955, with a 60-40 split between LTE and 5G as the deployment technologies. The evidence however, suggests this trend is changing due to a combination of fast maturation of 5G technologies and the long lifecycles of greenfield/newly built facilities. As a result, we’re seeing countries such as the US are increasingly opting for 5G over 4G deployments to future-proof their investments.

The report also found a strong, positive correlation between the number of private mobile network references and countries with dedicated spectrum. Such findings rationalize the business sense of deploying a 5G public network integrated mobile private network in scenarios by MNOs with aggressive 5G Standalone public network coverage deployment plans or where dedicated spectrums are lacking.

Further discussion on this issue appears in The use of 5G Non-public Networks to support Industry 4.0 scenarios, which provides an overview of several 5G deployment options relevant to non-public networks and their integration with mobile network operators’ public networks. The figure below provides an example, depicting a 5G public network integrated mobile private network. You’ll see that the private network is based on a 3GPP 5G system architecture and deployed in conjunction with a PLMN. It includes one public sub-network with one or more private sub-networks, whose network functions are segregated from the PLMN and are located inside the enterprise premises.

Such a setup ensures that locally generated data remains within the enterprise boundaries. Meanwhile, the core network user plane remains entirely separate from the PLMN, while the RAN and the core network control plane are shared with the PLMN. At the same time, segregation of non-public and public traffic is achieved through 3GPP-defined mechanisms, including network slicing. Importantly, the proximity of MPN services combined with data-sovereignty-compliant traffic management ensures the architecture meets the stringent ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC) requirements of Industry 4.0 use cases.

Amdocs’ longstanding partnership with MNOs pays dividends

Without a doubt, the next generation of networks will be about 5G services. Operating across multiple domains and technologies, they will traverse multiple accesses to the edge and core, and across hybrid public and private clouds. Amdocs’ expertise in 5G, together with our close collaboration with organizations worldwide has enabled us to address this complex challenge.

Amdocs Intelligent Networking suite showcases the ‘single pane of glass’ concept by demonstrating the end-to-end service and network orchestration that provides the complete lifecycle management of advanced 5G connectivity services, including 5G public network-integrated mobile private networks. The suite enables network function workloads to be intelligently placed across hybrid public and private clouds across multiple domains and multiple geographical locations. This in turn, empowers MNOs to create a software-defined architecture that can be deployed with any radio or infrastructure and at any location, with the ability to create edge application services capable of solving business-critical use cases.

As an example, consider the PoC created for A1 Telekom Austria, where we designed and delivered an environment for the deployment, management and monetization of 5G services as part of a mobile private network based on 5G Standalone, built on an infrastructure-independent cloud-native 5G edge architecture and with 5G Standalone core software. Significantly, partnerships paid a key role in this project, with an AR application vendor, a European cloud hosting solution vendor, Amazon Web Services, all playing key roles. This solution enabled A1 to intelligently deploy application software on the edge cloud, with 5G network function workloads deployed across multivendor hosted clouds.

Partnership is key to success

To create win-win business solutions that address 5G services based on 5G stand-alone technology complexity, it demands the forging of solid partnerships between enterprises and MNOs. With Amdocs’ expertise in 5G and close collaboration with organizations worldwide, we empower organizations to thrive in such partnerships, positioning them to support the most complex of Industry 4.0 use cases and reap the all the associated business benefits.
