As Amdocs continues to grow and evolve with the communications industry, we've seen several "Gs" come and go over the years as communications service providers (CSPs) advance their networks. But as the industry moves into the 5G-era, it’s time to recognize that 5G represents a significant leap unlike before.

It's not just the evolution of the network that's creating change: it's the evolution of everything around the network that is reshaping our world. One that's empowered by CSPs playing a new role in enabling amazing experiences for their end users, both individual consumers and enterprises.
For example, with our work with the 5G Open Innovation Lab and collaborators like Microsoft, we successfully launched the first drone-to-cloud data gathering and analysis solution to provide farmers with critical insights about the strength of their fields in near real-time. Using private networks, in conjunction with drones and AI, such precision agriculture allows farmers to be more eco-friendly and produce more crops. Although just a single use case, this deployment showcases the power of deploying 5G and private networks to create positive change for the environment and society overall, as well as demonstrating the vast capabilities of 5G and edge computing.
Indeed, with expanded revenue streams and increased connectivity, businesses can focus on using the benefits of 5G to deeper embed themselves in traditional and new industries, having the ability to genuinely change the world. Furthermore, this powerful technology has the ability to be felt far beyond highly populated areas like cities and business hubs and into more rural regions, setting the groundwork for our increasingly connected digital society.
5G offers new business opportunities for communications service providers
The pandemic has caused a great reset in consumer and business expectations, driven by experiences enabled by the network. Remote work and the dramatic digitization of industries and sectors, such as education and healthcare, are driving the adoption of advanced networks. At the same time, the exponential growth in experiences like the metaverse, cloud gaming and streaming, autonomous cars and more will deepen our reliance on advanced technologies that provide intelligent, high-speed, low latency, reliable and secure communications as the backbone of our society.
5G offers CSPs more opportunities to become a network platform player, enabling direct-to-consumer and business services with this new era. Whereas CSPs may have traditionally been thought of as providers for the individual user, 5G unlocks the potential for CSPs to power newly connected and IoT devices across a spectrum of enterprise businesses, exposing new, multi-billion-dollar revenue streams.
The 5G evolution also presents an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of mobile private networks (MPNs) as more data-reliant devices are connected to the 5G network in areas like real-time robotics control, intelligent video analytics, and augmented reality for machines and industrial processes. With manufacturers, educators and businesses becoming more reliant on ubiquitous connectivity, better controlling how critical data is traversed and flexibly scaling networks up and down to meet specific needs is more critical than ever.
To take advantage of what's possible, CSPs need to consciously harness the power of the cloud, modern software, new APIs, and advanced networks to provide an experience that garners a result beyond the traditional. For example, CSPs can enable the fast and intelligent rollout of high-speed, dedicated networks within sports stadiums to give fans immersive and responsive experiences with augmented or virtual reality (AR/VR). Across college campuses, CSPs can enable unbreakable connectivity that not only enhances digital learning and information access, but also increases network security and reliability. These previously improbable experiences would not be possible without this private network infrastructure.
Making the most out of 5G is a joint effort
As CSPs face continued pressure from digital-native players, diversifying with new experiences and monetizing them increases in importance. Finding the right partner with the experience of bringing together 5G implementation, cloud and charging capabilities will offer an advantage. With the broader adoption of 5G over the next few years, CSPs will be seen as the backbone of our modern connected society. They'll enable all industries to move to the next level of customer engagement, becoming more intelligent, efficient, and sustainable. And at the same time, they will allow new devices that enable the metaverse to leap us into the web 3.0 era with unimaginable new services and experiences. This new level of connectivity will become an embedded part of our society like never before.
A key element of Amdocs’ company strategy is around building technology platforms, products and services that allow this potential to unfold. We're leading some of the most significant network and customer experience transformations in the industry. We continue to expand our capabilities in cloud and networks by acquiring companies like Openet and Sourced Group among others, and have a deep partner ecosystem covering hundreds of media and entertainment, network and enterprise partners.
I'm excited at what the future holds and believe coupling the right technology with an innovative mindset is how we'll make it amazing together.
