Modernizing Production Workflows At DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks Animation partnered with Amdocs Studios, Amdocs’ experience-led and digital engineering division, to modernize how animated feature films manage digital assets and creative workflows at scale. A single animated film spans four years, involves 12 departments, generates hundreds of thousands of assets, and requires over 1PB of storage and hundreds of thousands of hours of compute. Managing this complexity is not only an infrastructure challenge but also a matter of usability, trust, and scale.

The Challenge

DreamWorks Animation creates some of the most complex films in the industry, with each production spanning years, involving multiple departments, and generating hundreds of thousands of digital assets. While the creative output was world-class, outdated workflows and fragmented interfaces slowed production and made technology adoption difficult.

The studio needed to modernize and streamline its production environment to handle increasing content volume and quality demands. The goal was to give artists faster, more intuitive tools that could scale with the pace of modern animation.

The Solution

Amdocs Studios partnered with DreamWorks to design a human-centered production environment that unified tools, improved visibility, and simplified collaboration.

A centralized Digital Asset Management (DAM) interface gave artists access to metadata, version history, and references across all production stages. A Design Library System standardized UI components and reduced workflow complexity, while key production pipelines such as Modeling and Character Effects were redesigned for greater efficiency. Additional pipelines like Digimatte, Grooming, and Previz were integrated into the modernization roadmap.

To support internal and external teams, a secure Partner Access Framework was developed to enable real-time, searchable access to assets. Together, these solutions bridged innovation with usability and empowered artists with intuitive, reliable tools.
