Amdocs and T-Mobile
I'm Hagai Pen. I'm the customer business executive for Amdocs at T Mobile focusing on the 5Gs space. This project is very important for us to help farmers find the right ways to leverage technology in order to support food resiliency. Look at what technology can enable them in order to collect data from the field throughout the supply chain and make sure that it drives right decisioning and insights in order to provide food resiliency here and in the rest of the world. I'm Angela Logothetis. I'm the CTO for Amdocs Open Network, and I'm a board member of the 5G Open Innovation Lab. Amdocs is helping in the food resilience project to build and operate the 5G network, which forms the foundation to this project. So our OSS software actually links together all of the technologies and all of the vendors that are needed to form a 5G network. The devices that are going to be out on the farm, the spectrum that connects those devices to the 5G network, the 5G network itself, and then really interestingly, the new network edge, which is really bringing cloud and all the power of the cloud much closer out to the farm and the farmers and the people that are creating the food. I'm Joe Rasmussis, the founder and CEO of the 5G Open Innovation Lab. There's a famous saying that Steve Jobs had, is sometimes your customers don't know what they need. And in this case, we're just making the possible happen because we have a network and access to applications and IoT devices that will make things that they didn't think they had problems with possible today. That's the start point. So the vision behind what we're doing here is to try to bring together entrepreneurs, industry partners, public and private institutions, and really bring the expertise to solve real world problems. And so why are we out here on a farm? Right? Well, one of the things that we have to do as part of that is to bring growers and farmers who actually are living this every day and have the real problems and start working with technology companies so that you can build solutions that are actually meaningful and will deliver value. I hope that through Amdocs' participation and our participation here, we can basically build fundamental building blocks that will enable farming to become smarter, agriculture to become more optimized, and take it throughout the entire supply chain, through transportation, utilities, and so on. What's quite amazing about this is we're out of the lab and into test beds. So if you look at the food resilience project, we're out in a a real real county with real farms, building real networks, and starting to run real use cases. And I think that's the the really exciting thing. This is not just a a lab exercise. This is let's get out there. Let's just make this work. And that's the exciting thing. It's bringing the technology, making it work, and then making it real.

Digital-to-Network & Slicing
Digital-to-network automation
What's your challenge? Check out this interactive infographic and find out how to successfully overcome it, reaching your reward with Amdocs' Digital-to-Network Automation solution.
So for me, network slicing is one of the more fascinating aspects of 5G. Because if you think about it, opening up the network and enabling external control of the network opens up a whole raft of innovation. Once the network is open and you are able to control the network, you're able to put a very innovative and intelligent software layer above the network. And that software layer is going to enable service providers to change the way they interact with their customers. For example, enterprise customers. It will enable service providers to interact with each other in a different way to what they do today. It'll enable service providers to interact with the cloud service providers and with over the top vendors like application and content vendors in a new innovative way. I expect to see not only new ways of operating the network and new services launched out to market but new business models coming into the market as a result of network slicing. We see network slicing really being adopted in three phases. Phase one is really around the operational aspects of the network. How you can operate many networks on top of the one network and really think about it as networks on top of networks. Some good examples are today you see service providers maintaining legacy 3Gs infrastructure because they have 3Gs MVNOs. So imagine if you could take that MVNO offering and put it onto a 5Gs network and run it as a slice over the network. You would no longer need to operate two separate networks. Likewise, we see a lot of initiatives around the world to close down legacy emergency services or public safety networks. And if you can put those on top of the one network, you start to get a lot of operational efficiency around CapEx and OpEx of the network, but at the same time you can start to deliver networks on top of networks. The second phase of network slicing is where we see service providers starting to launch new types of service offerings to the market. And this is really key because service providers are looking at the massive investment that they're going to make in 5Gs and trying to figure out how they're going to monetize that investment. And so if you think about it, 5Gs delivers some unique capabilities that service providers can start to monetize. For example, it delivers the capability to have billions of end devices on the network. So how do you create a slice to put those billions of devices onto the network and then to monetize a very high volume of devices that are actually just inserting a very low volume of traffic onto the network. Latency is another key aspect that comes in as a part 5Gs and service providers are looking at how they're going to be able to monetize latency. And building a slice for latency not only requires designing it right the first time and building it the first time but keeping that slice delivering those latency requirements day in day out 24x7, 365 days a year. Now why is that such a big challenge? Because the network becomes dynamically changing and in a dynamically changing dynamically moving network, how do you make sure that every time the network changes, the latency requirements of that slice continue to be delivered. Phase three of network slicing is when the service providers start to get services out to market that are specific to a customer. And especially around enterprise, we'll start to see service providers delivering specific slices to support either an individual enterprise or slices to support a type of enterprise. And they're looking at being able to build slices that deliver that specific quality of service out to enterprises in those industries. We may start to see our service provider customers actually enabling the enterprise to take control over their own slice. It means that in addition to the enterprise being able to control the application content that goes over the slice, the enterprise will also be able to control the network resources and the capacity and the QoS of the slice. Now obviously a service provider is going to need to make sure the right network integrity is maintained, the right network availability and the right security constraints are in place. And it would be a competitive differentiator for the service providers to be able to do that for an enterprise.
The journey to 5G network slicing
5G brings service providers amazing new monetization opportunities. With network slicing, one size fits all service models are being replaced with per slice models, catering to the individual needs of diverse applications and services while guaranteeing specific quality of service. However, 5G network slicing will increase the operational complexity of managing slice and network resources efficiently, all the way from radio access to transport to core and the cloud. Introducing Amdocs' 5G slice manager, a holistic 5G network slice lifecycle management and monetization solution that covers all stages from slice design through orchestration to real time assurance and closed loop operations. Everybody talks about digital. Cool customer experience, self-service, any device, anywhere. But what about digital operation? The reality is that it's still highly manual, very fragmented, fulfillment and activation are not zero touch as our service providers would like to have, and assurance and operation are still lagging behind. It's been like that for years, but now with growing customer expectations, the move to cloud, and the introduction of programmable network, it's even more challenging. To address that, we are launching a new solution, digital to network automation. It's part of Amdocs Neo. The solution addresses the operational aspects of the digital transformation, such as automated fulfillment, seamless inventory with real time view of the network across physical and virtual network, and the ability to automate as much as possible the service assurance and operation aspects. It's doing that on a modernized platform, which is cloud native with micro service based architecture and scalable to the service providers needs. The solution is part of CS20 and includes three products. The first one, also order service orchestrator, which is pre integrated with Digital One order handler. The second one is OND, open network designer, which is service catalog integrated to C1. And the third one is ONI, open network inventory that enables a view of the customer service inventory across any network. We are already deploying this solution with multiple customers globally. We're handling hundreds of integration points and multiple line of businesses across the board. All of the service providers are going through digital transformation one way or another. Amdocs has the right solution and technology as well as the experience in executing such complex transformation. Sounds interesting? Please contact us.
