Leading Bank Improves Decision‑Making with a Fully Governed Power BI Self‑Service Reporting

What started as a reporting bottleneck became a strategic inflection point. Replacing centralized reporting with governed Power BI self-service reporting removed friction from decision-making. Departments gained speed and ownership, while governance ensured consistency, compliance, and long-term scalability.

Together with the internal team of KB, a major Czech bank and a member of Société Générale, we helped deliver the rollout of a new Microsoft Power BI self-service reporting platform in the cloud, specifically to:

  • Prepare the platform technically for the self-service needs of individual departments
  • Raise awareness among potential users and strengthen trust in the new solution
  • Prepare the environment for subsequent enterprise-wide standardization by introducing unified reporting governance, including relevant methodologies and patterns

Business Needs

With increasing demands for a high-quality, data-driven decision-making process, a large bank cannot succeed with a centralized solution that creates a bottleneck in the delivery of reporting services.

The client’s objective was to democratize the reporting process—that is, involve the business units themselves and thereby meet business needs faster.

Challenges

Introducing strict rules from the start of implementation could have meant a hindrance to  the successful and rapid adoption of the new reporting tool. At the same time, a highly regulated banking environment does not allow complete freedom in this area. Balancing both aspects so that the subsequent standardization process runs smoothly will always present a challenge for any organization of this caliber.

At the same time, the large number of business report authors (hundreds) and an even larger number of report consumers placed high demands on supporting report creation.

Solution & Results

Profinit allocated a Power BI expert who helped design and set up governance for the development, administration, and evolution of self-service and standard reporting on the Microsoft Power BI platform.

The result is a comprehensive concept of how the entire Power BI platform can be used in both modes, and how to ensure efficient use of the premium cloud service capacity. The project also defined rules for reviewing semantic models in Power BI Service to ensure they follow Microsoft best practices and enable smooth standardization of reports prototyped by business units.

Profinit also provided expert consulting on how to use the Power BI platform in line with evolving requirements for data-solution development.

Key Facts & Achievements

  • 30+ departments involved in self-service reporting
  • 1,000+ reporting users
  • More flexible reporting, enabling a more efficient decision-making process

“In collaboration with Profinit, we successfully adopted a modern reporting tool that has become our primary reporting platform. The right balance of democratization and governance helps us satisfy business needs, technical demands, and compliance requirements. Profinit has provided great support in these areas.”
