How are we now better prepared to identify the unintended consequences of new technology?

In this episode, host Matt Roberts of Amdocs sits down with his next two guests at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain: Christopher Silberberg, Research Manager for European Telecommunications Insights at International Data Corporation (IDC), and Jeff Yee, CEO of Airwaive. Christopher shares a few of his key takeaways from the congress, including his thoughts on AI, ChatGPT and the Metaverse.

“Planet Earth is finite in some ways, but the metaverse, an immersive world, like Roblox, can build up and build up. So from there you go to six value pillars for IDC, but we see the core one being infrastructure and connectivity. You need to connect people in Metaverse and you need the datacenters, the edge facilities, the content networks to actually be the digital plumbing, to connect and engage on this in this immersive environment and multiple immersive environments.”

Next, Matt catches up with Jeff, who shares his perspective on practical applications of 5G, bridging the digital divide, and the return to normalcy in a post-pandemic world.

“5G is now fast enough now that it's broadband. You really don't see that much of a difference from cable. That's why 5G is seeing success right now for fixed wireless. So to solve the digital divide, I think, which was your question. Since 5G is now fast enough and far cheaper to deploy than landlines, it can be used for the 4 billion people, half the world, that still does not have an Internet connection to their home. Wireless is far cheaper.“
