Empowering women in AI
Recent survey data highlights a substantial gender gap in AI adoption.
While 54% of men have incorporated GenAI into their lives, only 35% of women have done so.
- Women constitute only 26% of the global AI workforce .
- In academia, only 11% of senior positions are held by women
- Across various tech jobs, women’s representation remains low: Less than 25% of AI specialists, 14% in cloud computing, and only 20% of engineers are female.
GenAI products are trained on large datasets, and if those datasets lack diversity, the model can develop biases.

Hi, welcome to the International Women's Day Toolkit. This toolkit will prepare you and give you everything that you need in order to run an AI session in your local school. My name is Shira Weinberg Harrell. I'm a product and AI expert and for many years I have led AI products within Microsoft. Today I have my own product management school and I also work with various organizations and audiences to teach AI tools and show them how they can use the Gen AI tools that we have today in their day to day and in their work. During the last year, I've had a chance to work with dozens of kids and teach them how to use GenAI tools, which is exactly what you're going to do. This toolkit has two parts: the instructor part, which prepares you and gives you all the things you need to know in advance and prepare in advance and the lesson part, which is the actual lesson that you're going to show. The lesson is available in six languages, so you can choose to work with the local language when presenting to the kids. Gen AI tools are amazing tools. I guess all of us already know that. But we also know that there are some biases in AI, some gender biases as well. And we also know that women and girls are less likely to use AI. So in this lesson, we'd like to equip the kids with the abilities to use these tools. We want to teach them and show them how to use the tools and build the competence and the confidence, allowing them to use these tools for their day to day, for school, for anything they want. So let's dive deeper and have a look at the deck. Okay, so this is our presentation, our deck, that you're going to use, and we're going to start with the first section, which is the Instructure Preparation. I highly recommend going thoroughly over that, when preparing. So we're going to go quickly over that. Some info about what you're going to do. You're going to have a forty five to sixty minute session with kids probably ages nine to thirteen. The main goals of this session, and that's pretty important to keep in mind all the time. The first is to introduce the students to artificial intelligence, understand what that actually means and how important it is. The second is to enable them to interact with Gen AI tools and to build their competence and confidence in using these tools, both for creative applications and practical applications. The third one is around critical thinking. We want to encourage critical thinking when using AI. We want to encourage them to think about considerations of fake information, of mistakes and biases, and harmful potential users. So what are you going to cover in this session? You'll start with presenting yourself and what you do at Amdocs, and then you'll explain what is AI. Then you'll have the main exercise. In the main exercise, you'll actually have three parts. In the exercise you will invent a new superhero. You will do that and the class will have time to do the same thing as well. So you'll start with individual thinking. Just thinking about who is my superhero? And how do I want my superhero to look like? And in this case, we really encourage you to choose a girl superhero because we want to seamlessly encourage the girls to create a girl superhero as well. Then you'll start using AI and you're going to use Microsoft Copilot for text generation. You'll introduce the tool to the class and use it to add more content, more characters and information to the character that you already invented. The class will do the same and then you'll do the most fun part and create the images of the character that you invented, of the superhero. You'll do that also using Copilot. So you'll show them how to create images using the tool and they'll be able to do that as well. After the exercise, you wrap up. You'll share the results with the class, talk about what you've seen and then discuss how the class can use AI in their day to day. How can they use it for school? Can they use it at home or for fun things with friends, for example? This is the lesson plan, a high level information about the content that you have and how much time it's supposed to take for each of the sections. In this slide, there are some technical preparations that you want to do in advance. You want to make sure that you know the tools, that everything is working for you, that you're using Copilot on your, device and you know how to use it. It's also recommended to make sure that Copilot is working in the language that you're planning to use for the session. It's unlikely that it won't, but make sure that, it is working as expected before you do it with the kids at class. And also there is a class preparation. A few things to make sure in advance. You want to make sure that the kids have computers or cell phones, even though computers are much better. And that they have an internet connection in class so they can actually use the tools by themselves. Important. If there are any issues with that, they can work in couples or trios, that can also work. You need to make sure that you can present your computer, that you have a big screen or a projector in class, and also that the kids can use CoPilot, that they can log in in order to use the tool. Here's a quick video you can use and you can even share with a teacher in advance if needed of how to create Microsoft account. In many of the schools, the kids already have a Microsoft account, but if they don't, that's the way to create it. And after the class, we'd like to collect, all the images that you created on your laptops with the kids, and share them with the Amdocs team. So after you're done, please upload your images to this shared folder and make sure that the name of the file includes your name, the city and the country so we'll know who created that. There are a few slides about preparing for unexpected issues, what to do if a kid can't log in, what to do if something doesn't work well with Copilot. There are some additional alternative tools here to create text or images that you can use. There are also some spatial cases to take into account. I recommend reviewing that more carefully before the class itself. And also in the case of an online class, it's always better to have a face to face class. But if that's not an option and you do that, in an online class, there's a few tips and recommendations here that can help you, do that more successfully. So moving on to this next part, the actual lesson. So this is the second part. It's actually the lesson presentation that you have in English and other languages as well. And I'm going to go very quickly over that. Note that you have the Notes section here and that's why I'm showing the full screen. And in the Notes section you have all information that you need per slide about what you need to say here, what do you need to do, how to ask questions, how to get information and ideas and create a discussion with the kids before sharing information from and examples that you've prepared in advance. So you start with a little game, let them guess which one is real, of the people here is real. There are a few of these. Then you're going to discuss what is AI. You're going to ask the class before sharing your definition, which is here. And then you're going to ask them where do they think they've met AI by today? Where do they already use AI? Let them have a discussion, give you some ideas before sharing your examples here as well. Then you're going to talk about Gen AI or Generative AI, which is AI that can create content for us. And you'll show this video, the commercial of Coca Cola, which was created using AI. So they can see that this is something that's really happening and being used in reality. Then you're going to start with inventing the new superhero and you'll discuss it with the class. You can start with your idea. My superhero will be a ten year old girl, for example. And then I can ask the class, Which powers should she have? Let's say I want her to have wings or a crown. What should be the color of the crown or the wings? Ask them for additional ideas. So for younger kids you might talk about the colors. For older kids you might talk about the pattern of the wings or where does she leave and additional characteristics. So you can change the level of discussion and the details based on what you see is relevant for the kids. So then the kids will do the same, they'll have a minute or two to think about their superhero, what will be their superpowers, etc. And then you can show them how AI can help us here. How AI is going to help us imagine this superhero. Here there's a hidden slide with video of what you're actually going to do. Let's see that. So you're going to use Copilot. You're going to type here the prompt and ask for ideas for your superhero. I recommend to ask concrete questions in order to get a pretty short answer that you can read with the class. So for example, here I asked for three ideas for colors and I got a few interesting ideas. So this is actually the first part of using AI, using Copilot to invent our superhero. Now it's going to be their turn. So they can use Copilot, log in, they might need some help so you and the teacher can help there and use Copilot for the first time and then they can use it to describe their superhero. A reminder that you can do that in every language. This demo is in English, but it's supposed to work in any language you choose. So after this part, they already have the idea of their superhero and you're going to show how she's going to look like. So you're going to use AI to create that. There are a few hidden slides here with examples that can help you when preparing. And here we have a video of the actual demo. Let's view how it looks like. So I'm using Copilot again. And now I'm asking Copilot to create an image for me. Now you can show the kids that when you ask for something pretty generic, like a superhero image, which is a ten year old girl. These are the examples that you get, the results that you get. It takes a few sentences to create the images and then you get four results. It. Okay, so these are the results that I got and they are pretty generic because I didn't mention any specific characteristics. And then you want to show the kids that when you're being more specific, you're getting something that's more related to what you had in mind. So here I ask for the same thing, but I add that she has green wings and a yellow dress. And now the results that I'll get are more specific to what I was imagining. Okay. So after you do this with the class, they can do the same. So it's their turn, they use Copilot again to create an image of the superhero that they invented. After they do that, you have some time for a wrap up. So you're going to discuss a few points here. You're going to ask them, what did they learn? What did we learn today? What was new to them? You can discuss how can AI help you? When can you use AI in your day to day? There's a lot of information, tips and ideas here in the notes, so I highly recommend going over that when preparing the class. Then you're going to discuss about how can you help AI and tell them that AI is always learning. So it's also learning from what you do and from the things that you ask it. And at the end, you're going to talk about whether we can trust AI or not. So there are additional information and tips here. You can mention the game that we started with, the fact that it's getting difficult to know what's real and what's not real and we need to take that into account. And also explain that AI sometimes makes mistakes and has biases, so the answer is not always correct. And we need to think about that and be aware of that when using information we get from AI. This additional slide can help you for advanced classes, maybe kids that already know the tools and you want to enrich them with additional information. So here there are a few additional tools that they can try at home or you can even try with them if you have time. There are text generation tools like ChatGPT, Gemini by Google and Cloud AI and additional image generation tools that are also free to use like Ideogram, Clip Drop or Firefly. So I hope you're going to have a lot of fun with the kids. It's an amazing opportunity to teach them something new and see how they learn and use those tools. Thank you.
