PLDT is a major telecoms provider in the Philippines. It provides mobile, digital, and fixed wireline services to more than 65 million consumer and business customers.
Challenge: Making the Most of Cloud Opportunities
An ongoing, extensive IT modernisation programme underway at PLDT is focused on improving agility so the business can respond faster to market dynamics. One aspect of the modernisation centres on migrating business support systems (BSS) and operations support systems (OSS) provided by Amdocs to AWS.
Amdocs Cloud assessed the cloud readiness of the business-critical applications which power these systems ahead of their migration, recommending the best way to move them to the cloud. Some applications were suitable for straightforward rehosting whereas others required refactoring to ensure they could operate effectively, efficiently, and securely in the new environment.
Solution: Expert-led Optimisation for AWS
As a trusted partner with detailed knowledge of the BSS and OSS applications, and deep understanding of telco sector demands, Amdocs was appointed to handle migration, modernisation, and operations. From a modernisation and operations perspective, a dedicated managed services team is collaborating with PLDT and AWS to ensure applications are primed for optimum performance.
Core aims for the managed services activity are to maximise system availability and scalability while ensuring cloud costs are closely managed. For instance, at peak times, PLDT needs to handle spikes in demand that equate to 3,600 transactions per second. Ensuring systems are set up to handle this reliably and cost-effectively on AWS requires expert cloud engineering. Other challenges which the managed services team need to resolve relate to factors such as ‘end of support’ for legacy applications.
Due to the scale and complexity of this project, which involves more than 400 applications, migration and modernisation has been split into multiple phases. During Phase 1, 81 applications of medium to high complexity are being modernised by the managed services team. Phase 2 is currently undergoing assessment of another 55 applications.
The Amdocs Services team supporting PLDT is located in the Philippines and India. Amdocs engineers are working closely with AWS, which opened a Direct Connection location in Manila in 2023. This includes in-person sessions which keep engineers up-to-date with current best practices for cloud optimisation.
Outcome: Mature Cloud Operations are a Strong Platform for Growth
Phase 1 of the application modernisation programme will be completed within November, resulting in smooth and stable production on AWS. The Amdocs managed services team’s close liaison with AWS means PLDT benefits from the latest tools and techniques to enhance performance and cost management in the cloud. With cloud operations being handled by Amdocs, PLDT is free to focus its energy on business growth and innovation, knowing its highly scalable cloud infrastructure can cope with increased demand.
